Lorain representatives fear loss of the 13th Congressional District as Ohio cuts two House seats. Democrats like Katherine Walsh expect survival. potential candidates include Koziura Zaleski Keys, White, Nielsen. Incumbent Pease quit in October, throwing the race open for 2024.
Koziura joins Walsh on the Ohio General Assembly committee shaping new districts as Democrats hold 11 of 21 seats and Republicans 10. He says Republicans will seek to redraw lines to gain an edge after Pease opts out, citing Lorain County's Democrat lead. He plans to write to House Speaker Riffe and the governor. Walsh Pease and Zaleski disagree.
Environmental officials told Lorain County residents a state plan will replace visual inspections with computerized tailpipe testing in four counties including Lorain as part of Clean Air Act amendments. The measure, backed by Senator Gary Suhadolnik, would expand to 11 more counties, raising total inspections nationwide from 60 to 153.
In Lorain County 119100 workers, including Ralph Shaw and Mike Hanna among 11200 jobless, seek six weeks of extra unemployment benefits as Congress nears passage. Hanna, 37, an aviation mechanic laid off near a year, and Shaw, 55, a former salesman, describe slim job prospects and plans to stay local. The House version would extend benefits for those whose 26 weeks ended after March 1, with eligibility and amounts based on income and dependents. The Senate may act soon, with Bush promising to sign.
