Jobless pay extension near Washington

The Bush administration and congressional leaders near a deal to extend unemployment benefits. The House Ways and Means Committee planned to debate a 5.1 billion package offering six to twenty extra weeks of benefits for the 300,000 who exhaust regular 26 weeks. The plan aims to end months of partisan fighting over aid while awaiting final approval and the president’s signature.

Lorain County Sees 1,643 Unemployed May Benefit

Lorain County has about 1,600 unemployed workers who might qualify for extended jobless benefits under a Congress compromise. The package targets residents whose benefits ended in the past six months and about 68,000 statewide fit that description. Spokesman James Hemmerly cautioned figures are estimates based on September statistics.

Elyria public schools will launch a can recycling program this month with a 45 cubic yard bin at Elyria High School provided by National Wastepaper Co. The program aims to teach students about recycling, generate revenue, and serve as a trial for city initiatives.

Tax abatement for LaGrange firm gets OK

Lorain County commissioners approved a 10 year $165000 tax abatement for Inserveco Inc. of LaGrange to expand its high tech computer components plant on Commerce Drive. The plan could add up to 48 jobs in two years and as many as 55 by 1996 with payroll rises of 700000 to 950000 annually. The Keystone school district will lose about 111000 over the period.
