Rate For Next Year Set At 4 Mill

The county tax rate for next year will be 3.4 mills, an increase of four-tenths of a mill over the present rate, announced today by County Auditor C. Kelser. Based on a county tax valuation of 160 million dollars, the rate will yield 544 thousand dollars for general expenses, though actual revenue may be reduced by taxes paid. The rise from three to three and four tenths mills was chosen after budget reductions cut items by 156,700 dollars, including road levies and other operating costs. A 0.55 mill sinking fund levy remains. Increased charity costs and declining real estate values also pushed the rate up.
