Nursing shortage eased briefly by foreign born and older nurses
An influx of older and foreign born nurses has temporarily eased a severe nursing shortage in hospitals but researchers warn the gap remains large. A Health Affairs study based on Census data shows 63,000 RNs 50 plus hired last year, vs 35-49 group growing slowly, with 34,000 foreign born hires. Over 20 years demand may rise 40 percent, possibly leaving a gap up to half a million nurses.
