Lorain County commissioners push sales tax hearing plan

Lorain County commissioners set three hearings next month to consider a 0.5 percentage point sales tax increase. Betty Blair and fellow Democrats back the process while Commissioner-elect Tom Williams, a Republican, opposes an emergency vote without voter approval. Hearings are Dec 8 and Dec 15 in the Administration Building.

Former Friday's property sold for Midway Mall revival

Sam Barowich of Lake County bought the TGI Friday's site at Midway Mall in Lorain County for 247000 dollars after a single bid at Wednesday's auction. He partners with Mario Khalaf owner of Lake Avenue Dairy Mart. They plan a family restaurant with American fare and hours from six in the morning to nine at night.

Bank Robbery Report Near Midway Mall in Elyria

Authorities seek a white male about 5 feet 8 inches tall 170 to 180 pounds who robbed First Place Bank at 361 Midway Blvd on Wednesday. He wore light blue coveralls a red baseball cap and work boots and fled on foot behind Marc's store after handing a teller a note demanding money. No weapon seen and no getaway vehicle reported. Tracking security footage is ongoing.

Starnes guilty in bank heists

Robert Starnes, 39, of Sheffield Lake, convicted in Akron federal court of two armed bank robberies and one bank robbery in three Lorain County robberies. Jury deliberated five hours before verdict. sentencing set for December 29 with up to 20 years possible. He allegedly robbed a Chase Bank in Sheffield Lake on July 23.
