Commission Defines Tax Exempt Items

Columbus Ohio November 19 The tax commission defines which items are food for home consumption and thus exempt from sales tax starting tomorrow Candy and similar items are excluded while products like butter coffee and vegetables remain tax free Food eaten in restaurants or hotel rooms stays taxable and meals in apartment hotel settings have varying tax rules The commission estimates revenue loss of about 2 million dollars through January and 12 million annually thereafter.

Perkins Sees New Deal Labor Legislation Growth

Secretary Frances Perkins told a conference that more and better labor laws were enacted since the New Deal began than in the previous three years. She cited the Wagner Connery act strengthening workers rights to organize and bargain, and noted relief agencies improving employer worker relations.

Charles T. Ely, 80, Elyria native, dies in Cleveland

Charles T. Ely, 80, former Elyrian and cousin of W. A. Ely, died at 11 a.m. today at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital. Born in Elyria, he lived there many years and worked with Gratton Stone Co. Survived by wife Bertha Ely two sons Dr Theodore Ely of Boston and Robert Ely and daughter Marr Day Ely of Cleveland. Funeral at 4 p.m. Thursday at St Andrew's Episcopal Church with burial in Ridgelawn Cemetery.

Nationalist Bombing Strikes Madrid Amid Loyalist Resistance

Five Nationalist tri motored planes bombed Madrid late today. A shell hit the Coresta Parliament building and about ten bombs were dropped with casualties feared. Cleveland Man Pleads Guilty To Larceny

Relief Director Salary Raised by County Commission

County commissioners voted to raise Relief Director Ernest E. Holmes to 150 dollars per month with an automobile expense allowance of 4.12 dollars per mile. The prior salary was 125 dollars monthly.
