Virginia to try D C sniper suspects first in death penalty state

Attorney General John Ashcroft said John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo will be tried separately in Virginia, with capital murder charges. Muhammad faces the Oct. 9 killing in Manassas, Malvo the Oct. 14 killing in Falls Church. Both cases could invoke Virginia’s tough anti terrorism and multi killings statutes.

Former SLA members plead guilty in 1975 Sacramento bank slaying

Four ex SLA members William Harris Emily Montague Michael Rortin and Sara Jane Olson pleaded guilty to murder for the April 21 1975 Crocker National Bank robbery in suburban Sacramento. Montague received eight years the others six to seven years. James Kilgore remains a fugitive. The group tied to the Hearst kidnapping expressed remorse to the Opsahl family.

Man freed after DNA overturns rape conviction in Maryland

Bernard Webster, 40, was released from Baltimore County Circuit Court after DNA evidence showed he did not commit the 1982 rape. Justice was slow, Judge Christian Kahl said. Webster, 19 at the time, spent 20 years in prison with no compensation or support, awaiting a fate changed by genetic testing.
