Voters in eleven states cast ballots in an off year marked by local battles. Governors, congressmen, mayors, and state officials faced contests while Mississippi and New York showed possible overtones of national party shifts. Detroit and San Francisco chose mayors in largely nonpartisan races.
In Campbell Ohio during a bitter election, two houses were bombed and a man shot as a 12 man gang targeted voters heading to the polls. Peter Manich hospitalized with a bullet wound at St Elizabeth's. William Phillips and Sylvester Bond jailed amid the incident.
Nov 8 reports say a fire at St John the Baptist orphanage in Gladstone killed three boys under five and left 74 children rescued. Sisters and staff carried nearly all youths to the main building, while some escaped by leaping from windows as an old heater in a converted dormitory exploded.
Election day in Youngstown opened cloudy with no rain as 40 000 voters faced six candidates in a nonpartisan contest. Voters also decide on a five year tax levy to fund the city portion of a 36,900,000 Erie Railroad grade crossing elimination project.
Lorain nov. 8 plan for a complete Lorain airport was unveiled by H E Hageman director of the chamber of commerce at a Kiwanis Club meeting which endorsed the plan. A stock company with 100000 capital to be subscribed by Lorain residents would own the airport project including a landing field about a mile long and 1200 feet wide pending government approval. The city would issue bonds to fund hangars and equipment with the plan sponsored by the chamber and Kiwanis and construction to begin at once.

Indianapolis council prepares to elect a new mayor to serve out the term of John L. Duvall amid a field of a dozen candidates. Nine council members are eligible to vote, four under indictment for bribery, with no closing nominations or recesses during balloting. The chamber remains split among blocs as a lengthy, uncertain vote looms.
Toledo voters face a tight mayoral contest as two grand juries probe alleged fraudulent registrations. Governor Vic Donahoy directs one inquiry with attorney general Edward Turner. Prosecuting Attorney Leroy Hunt leads another. Police seek 104 outstanding warrants for illegal registration.

At the Three C’s highway crossing north of Westerville Ohio three men escaped death when their car was crushed under a Pennsylvania train. Herbert Helster 52 suffered a broken hip and facial lacerations Fred Gilliam 27 had a lacerated scalp torn back and deep arm cut Kenneth Pugh 19 sprained ankle and bruises Witnesses blamed the car driver whose view was blocked by a billboard. Helster and Gilliam represented Buas Business College and were returning from Mt Vernon with Pugh a basketball player enrolled there.

Thousands of homeless, many in Vermont, sheltered in churches and halls under military Red Cross and volunteer care. Snow and cold persisted but food and medical supplies flow continued with no pestilence feared. Identified dead rose to 85, most Vermonters, as officials warn a final tally may never be known. Property losses in six states top $100 million. Isolated towns Bolton Waterbury and Duxbury face extreme hardship with marooned farms and scant heat. Rail lines remain disrupted and airplane deliveries assist, though snow limits travel and trucks struggle through mud.
Oliver Conley Independent candidate accused Republican chairman Howard L. Wickersham of improper voter registration. Conley alleged addresses were wrong and voters had not lived there for years. Wickersham, safety director under Mayor Sander, rejected the claim as a last minute tactic and declined action.
Sam Miller age 55 of Delphos died and four others were injured in a three vehicle crash near Van Wert. Adams and a third man who left the scene after the collision were killed when the car overturned after hitting a stone wagon. Car occupants were Delphos residents. Dods Brown Van Wert and Wes Murphy suffered minor injuries. Edwards and Adams were transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Trig blamed the crash on the car driver failing to see the wagon in time.
Edgar Allen spoke to the Young Men's Club about Elyria’s pioneering efforts with organizations that spread nationally and internationally. He described the crippled children and community chest movements and urged members to take active interest in local affairs to assume leadership in the future.
