President elect Harding plans to sail from New Orleans on a United Fruit steamer to the Canal Zone on November 18, with a return landing at Norfolk on December 4. The voyage will carry about 35 people, with ship timing adjusted to accommodate him and his party.
After an election many foreigners reappear at the county clerk's office to obtain naturalization papers. For weeks they were blocked by law provisions and the naturalization clerk is now very busy, with groups of two to six filing at once.
Reports from country districts indicate a strong rabbit season with many rabbits running wild this year. Hunters are already preparing guns and ammunition for the opening on November 15.
Lorain county spent about 8000 on the last election with 150 Elyria booth officials paid 1200 and 180 Lorain officials paid 1488 for election day work. Registration officials totaled 3672, plus 410 for county balance. Ballots cost 1600 to 1700 and pall books 2006. Miscellaneous items pushed total near eight thousand.
Final rehearsals for the minstrel show by the American Legion set for Wednesday and Thursday promise to meet the usual standard. New features are promised as capacity crowds are expected. Tickets are selling quickly and those lacking tickets may purchase them Tuesday morning at the theatre box office.
The list of possible cabinet picks under President Harding grows daily. Myron Ty Herrick, former U.S. ambassador to France, tops the new entrants for secretary of state. Will Hays is discussed for postmaster general or attorney general. Henry Wallace of Des Moines is named for agriculture secretary. Hoover is mentioned for interior, Miles Poindexter for navy, and ex-Congressman Gonde for treasury.
George Jiggs Lostelert, alleged leader of the Bedford rust company bandits, pleaded guilty to robbery in the Bedford bank raid. He pleaded not guilty to murder of Patrolman Raffony of East Cleveland. Murder trial set for November 24. Lastainer 13 is also suspected in the July New York Central railroad yard slaying of Detective Barnes at Elyria.
The Chronicle Telegram reports that the boys exceeded the 500 point mark in a demanding contest. Ray Terb and Leonard Ronk led efforts to track points and keep nerves steady as winners will be celebrated at a Chronicle Telegram banquet with speeches from notable figures. Ronk, who led throughout, set a high standard for future participants.
Supreme Court rules liquor lawfully acquired for personal use may be stored outside the home. The decision, in the Street case from New York, holds warehousing storage is permitted and transport from warehouse to home is not prohibited transportation under enforcement acts. Justice Clarke notes the issue hinges on storage in a safe deposit room rented by the owner.
In Columbus with Dr. A W Freeman and W H Dittee departing to Salem to investigate a raging typhoid outbreak. Freeman says water corrected weeks ago may have ended the infection, while authorities report 25 new cases and nearly 400 defined cases overall. Governors report no state aid appeal yet. Salem remains heavily affected.
Mrs. Rose Negus aged 65 of 416 Last Avenue died Sunday morning at St Josephs Hospital Lorafa after years of poor health. She had been ill since November 2 and was formerly Hyad in Boston with a literary bent, having published poems. Survived by her mother Mrs Julius Kiting 93 who lives with her in Rome a daughter living in California. Funeral services will be held today at 2 30 PM at the Bernet Undertaking rooms on Cleveland Street with burial at Ridgawn.
George Crossac and Whitney real estate dealers sue Michael Kerish and his wife of Ridgeville in circuit court seeking $650 in commissions. They allege a contract to sell property at $13,000 with a 5 percent commission, that they found a purchaser but the defendants refused payment.
Service Director Henry Beck let the contract for the Massey avenue bridge retaining well to the Highway Construction Co for 2 767 40 Several bids were received but the Construction Co were the lowest No cases were ready at the Court house this morning for jury trials when court convened The jury were called in and dismissed until next Monday Judge Redington will hear equity cases ready for hearing The M E church has purchased the Maynard property adjoining the church on Third street for 20 090 The property is 70 142 feet front by 365 feet deep A petition was filed for authority to borrow money in part for the property
J D Fletcher was fined ten dollars and costs in Justice Chamberlains court this morning for reckless driving after his automobile overturned in Ridgeville injuring him and a companion who fled before Sheriff Backus arrived. Both men suffered head body and limb injuries.
Chicago November session gathers leaders from both leagues to decide on a reorganized national commission. Han Johnson and Clark Griffith attend as owners press for the Lasker plan and a unified authority, with ultimata due at ten o clock. The eight ruling clubs, plus Chicago Boston and New York, weigh acceptance or conflict as talks unfold.
Washington November 3. The Supreme Court reversed a federal district court order and ordered the release of Jules W. Arnstein who had been imprisoned in New York since August 10 on contempt charges for refusing to answer questions in a bankruptcy hearing. Arnstein’s name was linked to an alleged ring of hand thieves in New York.
The Salvation Army will be favored with all by their Divisional Commander Brigadier Baillie and their Young People's Secy. Capt. Hoffman of Cleveland who will conduct a special service at the Salvation Army hall tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The public is cordially welcome.
Two divorce petitions filed in Elyria involve Hattie Tufreson and Nils Tufreson on grounds of gross neglect and extreme cruelty. Hattie seeks divorce and alimony. the action cites a ten acre farm and unequal burdens. The other case lists unusual marital strains amid allegations of coldness and neglect.
Reporters describe a large city event called Boom Boom Red Fire ending with a grand parade. Officials promise surprises, a Broad Street route to the court house, and a program featuring marching bands, drum corps, fife and drum groups, cannons, flags, and speeches by Republican and Democratic figures.
