Lorain County Sheriff Foils Large Dry Era Distillery
Sheriff Clarence E Adams and Lorain police uncovered the largest distillery in Lorain since the state went dry at 1762 East 28th Street. Vasil Monea was held on an $800 bond for possession of liquor after about 5,920 gallons of Mash in 98 barrels and 95 gallons of whiskey were seized. The operation included two 100 gallon stills used for rye whiskey and fig liquor, with the distillery located opposite the Lorain M. C. A. building. Monea was found asleep in a front room and later arraigned with a $500 bond for trial November 14. Officials marked the still as a prolific liquor source, noting it had been turned off recently. Sheriff Adams, deputies, and Lorain police officers led the seizure, the second distillery found in two weeks after recent Oberlin avenue discoveries.
