Sheriff Vernon M. Smith polled 59,558 votes in an opposed bid for re election. The 54 year old former Lorain Police Dept. member will begin his fourth term as sheriff, having first been elected in 1957.
William Phillips reports a $500 income rise for the first nine months of the year after a water rate hike. Nelson Gunn notes the reservoir is about 40 percent depleted with rough gallonage estimates due to lack of measurements. He also says the contractor has not inspected the water tower, and no repairs were made. A security light at the pumping station is yet to be erected this month.
Billy Daniels the Negro singer known for That Old Black Magic was stabbed in the back while singing at the Latin Quarter in New York. Police quickly captured the assailant Theodore Harmon 43 of Manhattan and Daniels was treated at Roosevelt Hospital in satisfactory condition overnight. Daniels had prior violence issues including a 1955 Harlem bottle club shooting and a 1957 cabaret license loss.
