Bingham Faces Senate Censure Over Clerk Hire
Senator Hiram Bingham of Connecticut faced a likely censure in the Senate after Norris charged him with improper employment of Charles Evanson of the Connecticut Manufacturers Association as his secretary and tariff expert. Bingham defended his motives, insisting no public funds were misused and arguing his actions served a protective tariff goal for his constituents. The Norris resolution seeks disapproval of the conduct, with Smoot offering an alternative that omits named individuals.

McCulloch Emerges as Likely U.S. Senator Choice
In Columbus on November 4 Ros eos C. McCulloch 49 Canton chairman of the State Public Utilities Commission appeared to have the inside track for the U.S. Senate seat to replace the late Theodore E. Burton. The choice narrowed to McCulloch and Col. Carmi A. Thompson of Cleveland with Charles Frederickson as a potential dark horse. Frederickson conceded and asked Governor Cooper to drop his name. Thompson’s supporters push for him, but he is largely eliminated, leaving McCulloch virtually assured. McCulloch, a former congressman who represented Ohio’s Sixteenth district 1915-21, previously ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1924.
