Convicts at Graterford State Prison released 28 of 38 hostages over three days and retain nine, including three guards and three staff, as negotiations with authorities continue. Bowen leads the four inmates, while officials seek surrender. Hostages freed so far were checked and escorted to infirmary.
In NORCO California guards fired light buckshot to quell a dorm riot at the California Rehabilitation Center after a day and a half of clashes between black and Latino inmates. Five prisoners were wounded but not seriously. seven were injured in the earlier outbreak and more than 600 inmates remained in the yard overnight as dormitories were secured.
Lorain Countys infant mortality improves from 17.4 to 14.8 per 1 000 live births between 1977 and 1979 yet remains higher than Ohio 12.8. Elyria reports 21 and Lorain 22.5 per 1 000, with neonatal deaths driving the gap. A task force led by Betty Wolfe urges expanded prenatal and pediatric transfer access to lower the rate.
