Berlin reports Germany and Denmark signed a non aggression treaty fixing their common frontier as part of Hitler s bid to offset a Anglo French Soviet peace front. The pact follows similar deals with Latvia Estonia and Lithuania as Sweden Norway and Finland rejected the offer.
Britain s king and queen wrap a restful day in Victoria and depart for an eastward route through Jasper National Park Edmonton and Niagara Falls to Washington D C They will board the Prince Rupert at noon for Vancouver before traveling to New Westminster to entrain for the east The king also presented the white silk ensign to 650 naval officers and men marking a royal first outside the British Isles
Paris May 31 Edouard Herriot former premier of France suffered head injuries in a car crash near Montargis. He was taken to Paris where doctors said the injuries were not serious. Herriot, 67, president of the Chamber of Deputies, has been a prominent political figure since 1912.
A devastating fire in Courtland, 18 miles north of Youngstown, destroyed half the village business district. Four Main Street buildings were razed and five damaged as flames crossed 100 feet, with losses around 373000. Lester Lowe drug store, Graham's tinshop, and the Unclaimed Freight Warehouse burned. across the street Isaly dairy, Biggins dairy, and Biggins Electric shop were damaged.
Cloudy night expected with Thursday becoming cloudy and cooler and light showers in the south. Friday looks for more showers. A low pressure extends from Minnesota to Arizona while a high pressure sits over the South Atlantic States and Quebec. Showers and storms reported from gulf states and St. Lawrence Valley to the upper Midwest and Montana. Cambridge authorities say two youths confessed to killing R E Willis 65 former Guernsey county sheriff during a holdup at his Suny Meade station on Memorial Day. Louis Pope 19 and John Mitchell 17 were captured later and face first degree murder charges.
Emil Stoll age 66 father of Mrs. Charlotte Bellis of Grafton was killed instantly when struck by a westbound Big Four flyer about 100 feet west of the Durkee road crossing. No witnesses reported per sheriff’s department. Stoll, a retired mining engineer of Washington DC, was visiting his daughter. He also is survived by Mrs. Effie H. Newman of Cleveland and Harold of Washington DC. Body sent to Washington after funeral arrangements.
Elyria observed Memorial Day with a 1000 strong parade to Ridgelawn Cemetery honoring soldiers of Civil War Spanish American War and World War I II and veterans of later conflicts. The Roosevelt School led in parade participation while the Lakeview School earned the highest enrollment percentage. Local civic groups and bands joined Municipal Judge Bradley Hull’s address and American Legion medals were awarded to Virginia Goodrich and Francis Obringer.
London and Clarksburg reports state Thomas H Smith, 18 from Old Orchard Beach Maine, left in a 65 horsepower plane Sunday aiming for trans Atlantic flight. gasoline stores may have run out with no radio contact. His parents refuse to give up hope he landed near a ship or on a British isle.
In Streetsboro Ohio two elderly bachelors were found shot to death in Joy Thomas 55 farm home. Thomas 55 lies shot on a dining room couch while Theodore Booth 60 WPA laborer is found dead at the foot of the couch. A missing man Walter Basel 63 is found hanging from a bedroom window. Police report a pistol with four shots fired and a scene of struggle. Neighbors recall arguments and talk of loans.
Ralph W. Standen was elected president of the Young Men's Club for 1939-40 at the final 1938-39 meeting. A. N. Smith, Seward N. Black, and Henry W. Ault named to officers roles. A medal committee of Wilbur H. Gaston Roy B. Clymer and Seward N. Black will select Elyria High School seniors for medals based on scholarship and participation.
In a typical stormy Lorain County meeting the board unanimously awarded the Lorain Avenue bridge contract to Mt. Vernon Bridge Co. of Mt. Vernon Ohio for 726385. The vote followed a heated exchange as Commissioner Dunn sought to award to the only bidder under the estimate and DeChant and Davidson initially withheld support. A parliamentary ruling allowed recording Dunn’s motion, which was later seconded and approved.
Lorain county relief headquarters will relocate tomorrow from Depot street to the Ebria Clinic building at West Avenue and Chestnut Street. A rental agreement settled Monday sets the cost at 87.50 a month, with fuel and utilities paid by the county. State relief examiner W. J. Donahue will gain an office in the clinic, while Commissioner Oscar G. Dunn opposed paying more than the prior 75 rental.
Navy salvage crews report slow but steady gains lifting the 299-foot Squalus with 26 dead aboard. A naval official warned August unlikely before the vessel surfaces. Chinese dispatches report about 800 Japanese troops killed in a Chungsiang area offensive south of Hupeh. Chinese forces recaptured Hsin-Chi five miles north of Chungsiang while large Japanese assaults targeted the Hankow Ichang highway under heavy artillery cover.

Six nervous bandits robbed the Boston Country Club in Boston Heights early today. They forced manager W. S. Chadwick golf pro Carson Heiner and 12 staff into the locker room and escaped with $12 from a desk while $500 remained hidden under a paper.
On a Louisiana Polytechnic College quad under mossy oaks two coeds planned a nonlethal duel with pies. Ann Halstead accused Varnelle Plastow of smears, Bettye Jane Cross tested the pies, and Rose Marilyn Burris acted as field judge. Halstead graduated the previous night.
Foreign office experts completed a preliminary note to Germany refuting Adolf Hitler's denunciation of the British German naval limitation pact while leaving room for further discussion. The government moves to meet Japanese threats by widening its Far Eastern policy from aid to China to active resistance and possible economic measures to protect British interests in the region.
Nazi storm troopers occupied about three private rooms of Archbishop Sigismund Waitz at Salzburg while the 75 year old prelate attended a bishops conference in Vienna. The palace, state property, had been ordered evacuated by the Nazis but the pace was slow. Msgr Waitz is Prince Archbishop and Roman Catholic primate of Germany.
Two Elyria women Mrs Chester Nichols and Mrs Jerry Kitchen of Adelbert street are confined in Bixby Hospital Adrian Michigan with painful injuries after their car was struck by a truck and rolled twice three miles from Adrian. They were en route to Sunfield to visit relatives of Mrs Kitchen. The truck driver will be questioned by authorities.
State Police rescued a young Albany couple, John Cannon and Lillian Hardy, after they tumbled 150 feet down a cliff at Thacher Park in the Helderberg Mountains. The pair lay for six hours in darkness, Cannon unconscious until a rescue party reached them with ropes and stretchers.
Governor Bricker approved a second relief financing bill allowing temporary diversion of automobile license tag funds for poor relief. He also signed Ohio’s ratification of an interstate compact to form a commission to control pollution in the Ohio river drainage basin with members from eight states and potential Virginia signatory.
Carl Bonar a 51 year old barber burned to death in a Cambridge home fire last night. His wife Mrs Bonar suffered minor burns. The blaze reportedly started while he slept and caused fatal injuries before firefighters arrived.
Elyria firemen Ben Mosley and Earl Schaefer towed a stranded heifer from a ledge at the Steel and Tubes quarry, then fought a series of blazes. They also responded to a rubbish fire at 100 Tannery street, a gasoline can fire near Lodi and West streets, and a grass fire at Western Automatic Machine Screw Company yard with boys blamed for matches.
Memorial Day period fatalities neared 500 with 432 deaths from automobile crashes fires plane crashes drownings and shootings. Highway accidents accounted for the heaviest losses as 209 died in motor vehicle incidents while 94 drowned and 129 perished from miscellaneous causes. Ohio reported 14 traffic deaths and West Virginia 12.
United Press reports from the weekend to Memorial Day show at least 25 violent deaths in Ohio. Included are 14 traffic fatalities and multiple other deaths across several counties, with investigations underway. Names include Raymond Beeck Toledo 19 Emil Stoll Grafton Carl Bonar 51 Cambridge Blake Maxwell 41 Columbus and others amid shootings, drownings, and accidents.
George Snyder former Elyria resident died Monday afternoon of a heart attack at his Centerville Massachusetts home. He retired three years ago after working as an engineer at National Tube Company Lorain. Survived by wife and three daughters Dorothy Snyder Morgantown Justus Pickett Newton Waldemar Nichols.
