America’s Energy Dream Under Pressure On Holiday Roads

A veteran columnist laments American gas use and foreign oil reliance during a long holiday weekend. He notes imports rising to 45 percent of U.S. oil, domestic production falling for six years, and energy policy failures from Congress and the Ford administration. He cites OPEC price fights, Alaska oil plans, and dwindling natural gas supplies as signs of an uncertain energy future. The piece questions where the nation is headed and criticizes Washington for not knowing the path forward.

Fish later prospers, writes widely, and dies at 81 in Illinois, leaving uncertainly whether he left a real will.
