President Reagan unveils a broad tax reform proposal with lower rates larger exemptions and fewer deductions aiming to lift the poor and require broader participation. He frames the plan as a fairness and growth measure and previews a detailed explanation to come with broad political backing and debate starting this week.
An arbitration driven package raises Elyria firefighters costs by 153 709 yearly. Base pay up 5 5 percent plus overtime and a 450 annual clothing allowance lifts average taxable wages to 27723 for 41 firefighters and higher totals for lieutenants captains and assistant fire chiefs.
Local politicians from both parties praised President Reagan's tax reform plan as a step in the right direction. Rep. Don Pease said he supports reform and favors shifting some burden to corporations, though he questions the extent. Lorain County officials warned about losses from federal deductions and revenue sharing ending. Senators Metzenbaum and Glenn criticized the current tax system as flawed and full of loopholes.
Elyria Board of Education heard the Citizens' Committee for Safe Schools push to expand its role. Martha Wise cautioned against inflaming the community and urged backing the board in a non detrimental manner. The group led by Dr. Thomas Williams aims to improve school discipline and academic achievement system wide and may field candidates for the fall election. The board also named John Ibosh Director of Transportation and Vehicular Maintenance at 24463 annually, replacing David Kick who resigned after theft allegations.
Kenneth Eugene Garrison 46 of Maple Heights died from internal bleeding after a shooting at the Grandview Motel on West Erie Avenue. His son Kenneth William Webb 27, of 4851 West Erie, allegedly exclaimed he shot his father as police investigated. A .357 revolver was found under a couch cushion in the motel office living room. Webb and two witnesses were detained. one witness released, another held on an outstanding warrant. Charges possible today.
