Vietnam Peace Talks Degenerate Into Sharp Verbal Battle

In Paris the Vietnam peace talks collapsed into exchanges of strong denouncements. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge called the Communist demand for unilateral U.S. troop withdrawal incorrect and illogical while accusing Hanoi of trying to exclude the South Vietnamese government and thereby prolonging the war. Deputy negotiator Ha Van Lau rejected Lodge's call to discuss a new approach.

Yanks Halt Viet Cong Meeting During Buddha’s Birthday Cease Fire

U S forces raided a Viet Cong strategy meeting 28 miles northwest of Saigon during a 48 hour cease fire. About 50 Viet Cong were killed, one American died, seven wounded. Viet Cong had planned summer actions. 200 women and children evacuated as fighting continued. Scores of weapons and one prisoner were seized.

Submarine Guittaro sinks at Mare Island after avoidable errors

Navy investigators found water from two separate crews during calibration and ballast tests caused the Guittaro to flood and sink in 36 feet of water at Mare Island Naval Shipyard on May 15. The committee blamed the Mare Island commander for ultimate responsibility though civilian supervisors caused the proximate failure.
