Bills Extend DUI Conviction Penalties And Jail Time

Lawmakers push three bills to widen penalties for habitual drunken drivers. One would extend the felony designation for a fourth DUI to ten years, another would add three years for aggravated vehicular homicide with three prior DUIs, and a third would mandate one to five years for a sixth DUI. Supporters say longer prison terms will remove dangerous drivers and deter repeat offenses. Mothers Against Drunk Driving advocates and victims’ families cite personal losses as motivation for tougher laws.
