The Bay of Bengal hurricane raged across Bangladesh killing at least 1,460 and causing widespread homelessness. Officials report thousands more missing as Urirchar island villagers were swept away and contact with the offshore island remained severed.
In Mexico City a tunnel crush at a playoff match left eight dead and 29 injured as thousands surged into the stadium without tickets. Red Cross spokesman Fernando Corona cited uncertain causes while public officials prepared autopsies. Two underage victims were reported among the dead.
Danny Sullivan overtook Mario Andretti to win the Indianapolis 500 by under four seconds at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sullivan led from the 140th lap after a 360 degree spin earlier, narrowly avoiding the wall and the rival in a dramatic race.
Two North Olmsted youths fired pellet guns during a 7:15 p.m. hike at Indian Hollow Reservation prompting a cancellation. Deputies interviewed the youths. no charges or arrests yet. Six to eight shots were fired as 40 hikers departed. park staff and police investigated and the area remained closed.
