Memorial Day Honors Two Gold Star Mothers in Ridgeville

In Ridgeville the Olde Towne Hall monument honors fallen service members as two Gold Star Mothers Mrs Harold Baldauf and Mrs Gaylord Kerr place flowers. A VFW honor guard fires a 21 gun salute while the high school band plays taps. Several thousand attend the parade with 15 groups in the procession from St Peters Cemetery to North Ridgeville Cemetery. Mayor Richard Noll notes growing patriotism amid national defense concerns.

Dust storms feared as volcanic clouds lift from Mount St Helens

Weather officials said ash clouds thinning gave eastern Washington clearer visibility after the May 18 eruption but warned fresh dust storms could persist for months. Forecasters noted ongoing uncertainty about a renewed eruption while rescue efforts faced continued ash cover and masks supplies ran low. Five people missing in the Red Zone near Mount St Helens were found and airlifted to safety.

Elyria man presumed drowned after Lake Ewe boating accident

The Coast Guard suspended the search for 35 year old Donald L. Miller Jr. of 41440 Oberlin Road who fell overboard from the cabin cruiser Lemonard near Huron Sunday night. Miller who was not wearing a life jacket slipped and went under. Boat owner operator Robert Monshein of Wellington jumped in to help and barely saved himself. Miller’s wife Judy said Monshein called the coast guard at 8 30 p.m. and search efforts included vessels and a helicopter. Miller was active in the Elyria Evening Lions and sponsored a Little League South team. He was a hunter and fisherman and a member of the LaGrange Masonic Lodge Elyria Elks and United Polish Club. Funeral arrangements are with Wainwright Funeral Home.
