Pontoons to Raise Sunken Squalus Submarine

Two navy experts from Washington arrived in Portsmouth to outline a plan to salvage the sunken submarine Squalus and the 26 crewmen. Commanders A R McCann and A I McKee will guide divers as they attach lines and pontoons to lift the hull, with air pumped to expel water. Divers clear the salvage deck of Falcon awaiting the surface recovery.

Municipal Flag Day Plan for Elyria June 14

The Municipal Flag Week Committee led by Mayor Joseph Q Petro advances a city wide observance from June 8 to 14. Elyria High School Band will play, a flag ceremony modeled after Elks services is planned, and Elyria Legion Drum and Bugle Corps may conduct a drill review. The Elks Lodge joins the municipal effort for the largest Flag Day event yet.

Police report 4 PM yesterday as Tom Wallace of 187 Bath street backed into a hill on Washington avenue damaging his fog lights. The other vehicle was operated by Mrs Ralph Tichenor of 510 Woodland avenue.

A trough of low pressure extends from Ontario through the Upper Mississippi Valley to Kansas. Showers and thunderstorms are general over the Great Plains central valleys and lake region. Hales Memorial Gymnasium Dedication At Oberlin

Oberlin College will dedicate the first half of the Hales Memorial Gymnasium on June 12 with a concert by the Oberlin Concert Band and a building tour. Donor George Willard Hales contributes $150 000 toward the project next to Allen Memorial Hospital.

Oberlin Grange held its regular meeting at the Grange Hall with Mrs Helen Sanders voted in as a new member. Four membership applicants were named A M Dean Mrs Albert Dean and Mr and Mrs George Malke. An upcoming Pomona Grange meeting at Ridgeville on June 10 was announced.

Sewing Sallies Meet Markley at Advisor Home

The Sewing Sallies group held its second meeting at Mrs. C. E Spaulding’s West River Road home. Winifred Smith was elected recreation leader and refreshments were served by the hostess. The next meeting is set for Friday June 2 at 7:30 PM at Mrs. C. R. Wooding’s West River Road home.

Elymian Receives Art Scholarship in Columbus

Jack Warden Jr of 225 Chestnut Street is among 32 awarded scholarships by the Columbus School of Art. The 56th annual convention in the Gallery of Fine Arts announced the grant, the third for Warden who trained in high school locally and studied at the Columbus Art School for two years.

Center For Sightless Not Open Memorial Day

Owing to the holiday on Decoration Day the Center for the Sightless will be closed and there will be no work on door mats. The Boy Scouts are delivering as mats are completed but material shortages caused delays. All will be finished early in the week and the remaining orders delivered.

Rochester Memorial Day Services at Town Hall

Memorial Day programs will start at 2 PM in the Rochester town hall with music exercises and a talk by a noted speaker. A parade to the cemetery follows, with children carrying flags and wreaths. taps and a gun salute will honor fallen soldiers.

BANFFY Alberta May 27 King George and Queen Elizabeth relax in a Rocky Mountain resort town. They swap formal wear for tweeds and consider a golf round while the king heals a train injury. They plan hikes near the hotel and a drive to Lake Louise before continuing to Vancouver.

Dunham Proposes County Road Plan with $62,000

County Engineer Harry S Dunham presented a road program totaling about $62,000 to the county commissioners. He said this portion is less than half of the funds needed to repair roads and bridges, with an estimated summer total of $156,000 including about $50,000 for bridges and culverts. He noted the road and bridge fund holds about $97,000 now and expects more from gas and auto license taxes later in the year.

Pneumonia Fatal To Dr C H Mayo

Dr Charles Horace Mayo died at Mercy Hospital after an eight day pneumonia siege in Chicago on a business trip. At 73 he helped build the Mayo Clinic with his brother into a renowned medical research and treatment center. He pioneered nervous system surgery and goiter operations and performed hundreds of eye cataract procedures and other surgeries.

New Industry to Begin Operations at Former Plant

Moving days for Manufacturers and Fabricators Inc. near end as equipment is expected to be at the plant by Monday. Carloads of machinery have been moved from the Cleveland plant and office furnishings are being moved. Installation is planned to start early next week at three buildings of the former American Rolling Mall Company plant.

Old Glory Grange held its regular meeting with Worthy Master Wilmot Long presiding. Ten members attended, eight officers. routine business completed. Former Probate Judge Wilcox To Speak At Brownhelm Services

Brownhelm plans Memorial Day observances at the Brownhelm cemetery with Post 1079 VFW Elyria in charge. Judge H C Wilcox, former probate judge of Lorain County, will speak as the band and drum corps join in honoring veterans from all wars. The event draws about 1,000 attendees and features flowers, flags, and participation by local lodges and Mullen-Murray Post 451 Lorain.

Memorial Day Observance in Elyria Sees Parade Without GAR Veterans

Preparations for Elyria Memorial Day proceed with a 2 pm parade route from West Ave to Ridgelawn Cemetery and a civic address by Cleveland Judge Bradley Hull. Due to the passing of GAR members Rev A J Kaley and Capt LaFayette Stough, the procession honors change as units assemble on West Avenue and form into four divisions with police, veterans, and youth groups contributing to the ceremony.

Commissioners tour new courthouses in Clarksburg and Portsmouth

County commissioners continued their study trip to West Virginia and Ohio visiting two new county buildings on an 800 mile itinerary. In Clarksburg they examined the 1931 32 Walker and Weeks designed courthouse noting efficient space use and office layout.

Dedication Services At Grafton Sunday

Union services will be held at Grafton Methodist Church to dedicate the new sanctuary finished after redecorating and remodeling. A committee led by Mrs Edith Howard and Rev George Beebe oversaw work with dark oak, ivory walls, burgundy carpet, new chancel furniture and pews. Dr Vernon Wade Wagar will preach morning and Dr Rollin Walker will give the evening address as the Epworth League marks its fiftieth anniversary. A noon fellowship dinner in charge of Mrs Clark Finley draws former members and Belden and Grafton congregations. Special music will be provided by the Grafton Choir and soloists Paul Wainwright and Mrs Baird with Mrs George Edwards at the organ.

Aide of Pendergast Seeks Leniency in Tax Evasion Case

R Emmet O'Malley former state insurance superintendent admitted taking 62500 to influence rate settlements benefiting 138 fire insurance firms. He pleaded guilty to income tax evasion and, like Tom Pendergast, sought leniency as he faced a prison term and a 5000 dollar fine.

Repair of Water Damage at Cascade Park Nears Finish

Cascade Park repairs progress after a storm sewer pipe failure caused major damage to the baseball diamond and roads. Parks committee and city council officials inspected the site and expect to submit recommendations as work nears completion and the park reopens to traffic and play by tomorrow.
