Cascade Park Elyria readies for summer as the auto trail through the park opens tomorrow after flood repairs. Diamonds and much playground work are near ready, though tennis courts and pool repairs lag due to funds. pool opening remains uncertain. Park officials expect thousands of visitors from Lorain County and beyond.
Special memorial services are set for tomorrow at 10 30 a m at the Capitol Center under Church of Christ auspices. L B Hindman will conduct, Paul Wainwright will provide music, with a 10 am flag-raising at Ely Park prior. Danish American War Veterans and Auxiliary lead the Spanish American War tribute. A 2 30 pm service at Washington Avenue Bridge honors sailors, featuring Harvey Chenes and possible Wainwright song. Brownhelm cemetery service includes Mayor W Van Oster and V F W drum corps debut.
Avon Lake gears up for Memorial Day as veterans organizations and assorted groups prepare a ceremony starting at the school on Route and concluding at the cemetery. Scouts, council, B of E, Shore Union, PTA, American Legion Auxiliary, garden clubs and others join, with flowers placed by garden clubs under Mrs Kavanaugh's direction and soldiers' graves marked with flags.
Ohio residents are advised of generally fair conditions tonight and Sunday with a chance of local undershowers Sunday afternoon in the southern portion and little change in temperature.
Hundreds of Elyria students are expected to join Memorial Day exercises honoring local soldiers on Tuesday though schools are closed. Superintendent R C Maston urged teachers and pupils to participate. prizes will go to the school with the largest representation and the largest enrollment percentage, with an American flag awarded to each winner. The parade forms at Third Street and West Avenue at 2 15 P M with captains directing students to positions before it starts.
City workers received another two weeks of pay following a special council session. The council approved a 36,000 advance from the county treasurer toward the city’s share of personal tax collections and moved funds to cover two weeks’ salaries, leaving six weeks still owed as of June 1. Mayor Van Oster’s veto on Elyria city separation from Elyria township was read and referred. New relief staff were authorized: three investigators at 15 dollars weekly and two office assistants at 10 dollars weekly, per county relief commission aims for monthly relief-case investigations. relief families have dropped from 1,200 to about 500.
Residents of the Village of Dover will honor fallen soldiers with Memorial Day exercises at Evergreen and Maple Ridge cemeteries. The 10 a.m. program, directed by the American Legion, includes military music five minute talks and graves decorations for soldiers and sailors.
Two Sandusky men sustained serious injuries yesterday afternoon when their machine crashed into the rear of another vehicle on Lake Road near Stop 117. Peter Ule suffered a severed nose and Frank Bony had severe lacerations. Dr. Lee of Vermilion treated them before they were taken to Sandusky Hospital. Theodore Lehner of Sandusky operated the other truck involved. Lehner’s truck was out of commission.
The U S assembling a delegation to represent the nation at the London economic conference. Members include Raymond Moley James Cox Norman Davis Samuel McReynolds James Warburg and Rexford Tugwell. They will sail aboard the President Roosevelt and attend sessions in the Geological Museum London.
Exposition gates opened at Soldier Field as dignitaries from many lands attended ceremonies marking the Century of Progress. Postmaster General Farley led officials, amid flags, banners, and a goal of 50 million visitors in five months.
Elyria High School alumni numbering over 300 will gather at the school auditorium and gymnasium for the annual alumni meeting. The newly minted graduates 223 seniors and 96 January grads will attend as guests. Special reunions are planned for classes 1883 1893 1898 1908 1913 1923 and 1928 with an 8 p m program followed by a gym dance. The date moved from June 39 to June 1 to align with commencement changes.
Baxter C Sharp announced his candidacy for mayor of Elyria subject to the August Democratic primaries. He attended Elyria schools Culver Military Academy and the University of Michigan engineering department. A son of former ambassador William Graves Sharp he returned from France in 1915 and has worked with a Cleveland insurance firm at age 29.

Preparations were made to take the Oberlin municipal light plant bond issue of 250000 to the Ohio Supreme Court. Ohio Electric Power Company seeks permission to intervene as a taxpayer and assert the case, which has failed in common pleas and appeals, may be heard before June 16. The company claims funds may be used for dual purposes, buying or building a plant, and argues bonds may be sold for only one purpose.
Elyria plans its Memorial Day tradition with the illuminated fountain in Ely Park being turned on next Tuesday for the first time this year. The fountain, a downtown beauty spot dedicated as a memorial to local G A R veterans, will feature the same changing color effects as last year.
Elyria Y M C A prepares a broad summer program now that schools are closed. The pool reopens Wednesday afternoon after repainting and cleaning. Swim classes run daily with Cadets and Preps at 2 pm, Junior B and A at 2 30 pm, and Employed Boys at 3 0 pm. Saturdays feature Cadets and Preps at 10 am and Junior A/B at 10 30 am. A free beginners class is at 10 am each Thursday.
Mrs Bruce MacDonald a 65 year old wealthy widow and former banker was found beaten to death in her Flint residence today by her maid. Police cordon off the scene as investigators begin a homicide inquiry in the quiet neighborhood.

Roy H. Cope 53 former deputy county auditor and deputy treasurer and state examiner died at Elyria Clinic after a two year illness. A Farmington native and Belmont county former auditor he moved to Elyria in 1915 and held multiple state and county posts 1909 to 1930. Survived by wife Margaret a son and a daughter with brothers and cousins. Funeral services at Nichols Funeral Home Monday 7 PM, burial in Farmington.
