Holiday traffic death toll falls short of forecast
United Press International counted 361 traffic deaths during the Memorial Day weekend from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight. California led with 41 deaths, followed by Florida 32, New York 22, and others. Fatal crashes included a Lake Tahoe trip collision near Carson City, brakes failure cited in Malibu, and a fatal car crash near Newaygo killing four Michigan high school seniors. Alaska and several states reported no fatalities.

Crabtree Mint Shut Down in Arkansas Counterfeiting Case
A Secret Service raid on a rural farmhouse near Crabtree Arkansas uncovered a basement mint where counterfeiters printed about 1.5 million dollars in bogus $100 and $20 bills. Authorities say the operation ran six to eight months and circulated most notes in Mississippi and Tennessee. No arrests were made at the time, but several indictments were expected when the next federal grand jury convenes in Little Rock.
