Union workers mass buyout at Fazio's hits 400 to 500

Local 880 of the United Food and Commercial Workers estimates 25 to 30 percent of eligible employees accepted the buyout offered by Fazio's by the Thursday deadline. Officials cite 400 to 500 workers, with some county offices suggesting higher totals among laid offs. Widespread reductions leave few full time staff, sparking allegations of buyout abuse under the industry contract.

Rare trumpeter swans surprise breeder at Game Farm

At On the Winged Feet Game Farm in Grand Rapids Ohio, Orlie Weaver keeps rare waterfowl with a Doberman for company. He sent two trumpeter swans to Winnipeg and earned the Master Waterfowl Award from a Canadian association. One year his three pairs produced 10 chicks worth about 1000 dollars each, but none bred this year. Weaver notes 1800 Americans keep rare birds, but only 423 trumpeters are in captivity in the United States. He emphasizes patience as essential to breeding and says many keepers only feed their birds rather than attempt breeding.
