Spy case widens as Walker espionage ties grow

A retired Navy specialist began spying for the Soviets in 1966 while aboard the submarine Simon Bolivar, with his son Michael charged for aiding the effort. The FBI expects more arrests as a Soviet diplomat is recalled. Walker relinquished classified Navy documents at a rural drop site near Washington.

Wellington supt studio cleared in monkey yearbook libel suit

Lorain County judge granted summary judgments for Lifetouch studio and Wellington schools superintendent James McGlamery, dismissing two primary defendants from a $2 million libel suit over a 1982-83 memory book image of Ratliff as a monkey. The amended suit and a countersuit remain unresolved.

Corridor plan advances on Lorain north-south route study

Lorain County Planning Commission pushes ahead with a study of a north-south corridor linking Lorain to I-480 to create a feeder to I-71. Three alternate routes are sought for state review, with the original four-lane route evaluated for cost and bridges. Warner & Associates engineers lead the project, estimated over 40 million dollars. Governor Celeste and ODOT officials discussed routing on Governors Day.

Gumina to buy LRD Building in Lorain for $3.6 million

Lorain developer Carl Gumina announced plans to buy the LRD Building at Broadway and West Erie Avenue and link it to a new 22,000 square foot second building with a walkway. A parking garage is planned on city land, total parking to about 300 cars, with Ohio Employment Service moving into the new structure and possible new jobs.
