Spenkelink executed in Florida electric chair

John A. Spenkelink, 30, was put to death at Florida State Prison in Starke becoming the first prisoner executed against his will in the United States in more than a decade. The 10:18 a.m. death followed a delayed start and three electric jolts as witnesses watched from behind glass.

Woman slain in Ridgeville as husband hunted

A public quarrel on Jaycox Road left Twila Markowski, 28, dead after being dragged from her car and shot three times by estranged husband Lawrence Markowski, who fled in a blue Oldsmobile. North Ridgeville police issued a warrant for his arrest as witnesses described the confrontation and pursuit.

Soviet citizenship law alarms Lorain pastor

Reverend Basil Stoyka of Lorain calls a new Soviet rule ludicrous as it would grant citizenship by birth to millions in U S S R regions and to some with one Soviet parent. He warns U S officials fear the move used to harass travelers and cites potential impact on Lorain and Cuyahoga residents ahead of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Rain and wind cause outages across Lorain County area

Strong gusts and spring rain knocked out power to about 3,000 Ohio Edison customers in Mills Creek North Ridgeville from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday. Dozens of smaller outages were reported in Lorain Vermilion and nearby towns as crews restored service.

Prices rise as inflation tops 13 percent in April

Washington reports April CPI up 1.1 percent, gasoline costs jump 6 percent for the month, driving yearly inflation to 13.2 percent in the first four months. Food and housing also rise as beer, fuel oil, and mortgage rates surge. Blue collar earnings drop 2.4 percent from last month.

Cameras in court test yields no objections in Lorain trial

In a pre test by the Chronicle Telegram cameras photographed a civil trial in Lorain County Common Pleas Court with no objections from participants. Ohio begins a year of court cameras on June 1 approved by the state Supreme Court. Jurors could not be interviewed until after verdict. The civil case involved Gertrude Kritzel seeking damages from Richard Walker after a March 24, 1975 collision. verdict awarded Kritzel $22,500 plus nearly $12,000 in medical costs.
