The Lorain County Veterans Memorial kicked off Memorial Day weekend with its 23rd annual vigil honoring Lorain County service members who died in Vietnam.
Virgil L Smith of LaGrange Township honors seven brothers who served in World War II Europe and Korea with a backyard memorial. His brother Don died in Korea on Christmas Day 1953. Smiths MP service in the Pacific and his teaching career in Elyria frame a labor of love honoring family and freedom.
Memorial events chart a busy day with parades assembling at schools and civic sites, salutes at cemeteries, and services in parks and town halls. Community groups including VFW posts AMVETS posts and Lions Club sponsor ceremonies with bands and ROTC, inviting all veterans and the public.
