Lorimar Telepictures, part of the Dallas show empire, agreed to buy Channel 8 and six other Kohlberg Kravis Roberts stations for about 1.85 billion dollars. The deal paves the way for a major TV network realignment as WJW TV and six peers change hands.
TV editors recount surprise over last year’s sale of Storer Communications assets to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. Channel 38 employees say they learned of the deal from newspapers, while Station Manager Virgil Dominic and General Manager C. David Whitaker declined comment or were unavailable. An employee disputes a memo report on how staff was informed.
News of the Channel 8 sale spread with some staff still unaware by Wednesday. The move is not expected to disrupt CBS network provided programming but sparked chatter at the station. Reportedly one employee circulated photos of Larry Hagman with comments about the new boss. Other stations in the deal include WAGA Atlanta WSBK Boston WJBK Detroit WITT Milwaukee KCST San Diego and WTVJ Miami. WJIW was purchased by Storer in 1954. Besides Channel 8, two other deals filled the week.
John Darling Win Communications Inc of Cleveland plans to buy six radio stations in Indiana Illinois Oklahoma and Iowa pending FCC approval. The buyer established 1984 as WIN run by Walt Tiburski former WMMS-FM GM. Stations sourced from Mid-America Audio Video Inc of Kankakee Illinois. Jackie Jacobs JACOR Communications eyes WLW AM. Jack Reynolds takes WBBG afternoon drive 3 to 8 PM after leaving 6-midnight shift. Reynolds also fills on WUAB TV Channel 43s prize movie.
