Hays cancels England trip over mistress allegations
Rep Wayne L Hays of Ohio canceled a planned England visit to receive the Magna Carta as a possible congressional probe looms over claims he kept a mistress on the House payroll. Hays, 64, denies the accusations made by Elizabeth Ray, a former mental patient who says she was his mistress. Ray acknowledged posing for Playboy. A congressional delegation intended to include Hays but traveled to England to obtain a loaned copy of the Magna Carta for the US Bicentennial. Hays stayed in Washington to discuss possible legal action with his attorneys.

Jail alarm fixes seen as minor says architect
Elyria officials struggle to open Lorain County’s new jail amid water supply and power problems. Architect Ronald Landig says most fire detection changes take about 20 minutes, but lack of a generator and water pressure could delay opening for up to 18 months. Fire inspectors cited central alarm tieins, ventilation, cell block detectors, and lack of smoke detectors.
