Proposed Vietnam memorial center sparks House hearing
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington faces a controversy over a planned 10,000 square foot visitors center to be built mostly underground. House subcommittee members and Robert Duvall testified, with backers led by Richard Pombo saying the center would educate visitors about the war and sacrifices. Critics from the National Park Service and the National Capital Planning Commission warn the project could distract from the wall’s impact and mall vistas. Proponents say private donations will fund the center, aiming for operation by 2006.
