In Springfield Oregon Kip Kinkel, 15, allegedly kills his parents at home then returns with a rifle to Thurston High School. In the cafeteria he shoots indiscriminately, killing one and wounding 19 others as students describe his calm, casual manner and the chaos around him. He is later tackled and faces an adult court appearance. The incident follows a string of school rampages across the country.
Richard Tennant Jr an 18 year old Brookside High School senior was charged with aggravated menacing for telling a teacher and students he might shoot if he did not perform well on a test. He was arrested at home after a police warrant and released to his father on $500 bail. He faces arraignment next week and was suspended for the remaining eight school days.
The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted a stay of execution for Wilford Lee Berry Jr, allowing his planned March 3 lethal injection in Ohio. Berry, known as The Volunteer, was convicted of killing his boss Charles Mitroff in 1989 and has urged execution over lifelong imprisonment. Public defenders argued Berry, 35, was mentally ill and incompetent to drop his death appeals, but the court upheld the Ohio Supreme Court finding of competence.
State Sen. Alan Zaleski introduced a bill allowing child placement agencies to review confidential juvenile records in addition to adult criminal records when screening foster homes. The measure, if passed, aims to prevent placing foster children in abusive homes.
The death of a Lorain woman killed by an acquaintance handling a gun at a party prompted the Ohio House to pass a felony called reckless homicide by a 93-1 vote. State Rep. Bill Taylor sponsored the bill. it now moves to the Senate for final passage.
