Flu vaccines may be made stronger in next season
Atlanta based officials and CDC researchers urged doubling flu vaccine potency after last winter's 13 week epidemic raised deaths to 60,000 to 70,000 above normal. Studies blamed changes in three influenza virus antigens for reduced vaccine effectiveness from 48 percent and indicated higher potency could boost protection without extra side effects. The advisory committee favored increasing strength for the upcoming season.
