Elyria to Add Officers for Downtown Watch

Elyria police will deploy two to three extra officers on Friday and Saturday nights around downtown bars using emergency overtime until funds from the Alcohol Education and Enforcement Fund can be freed. The move follows the Toy Box Night Club shooting and recent downtown violence as city officials seek control of the area.

Special Olympics Opens 30th Year at Ely Stadium

The 30th annual Special Olympics began at Ely Stadium with about 500 athletes from Elyria, Midview and North Ridgeville. Young competitors like Drew Menner and Kayla Stearns exhibited determination and joy as they ran, threw, and earned ribbons in events from the 50 yard dash to softball throw.

Lorain officials call meeting with feds productive

Lorain city and police leaders met with the U S Department of Justice to review federal investigation into alleged excessive force by Lorain Police. City officials called the session constructive and said they provided use of force records from 2009 onward while awaiting DOJ guidance on implemented recommendations.

Court Orders Lorain to Pay $175,000 Settlement

A federal judge ordered Lorain and its insurer United National Insurance Co. to pay a $175,000 settlement to Sarah Long, a Lorain woman stalked by a police officer. Attorney Mike Duff Duff said the city had not paid by the May 1 deadline, with city and insurer still arguing in court documents.
