Beiru clashes between Amal and Palestinians kill dozens
In west Beirut Shiite Amal militiamen and Palestinian guerrillas fought fierce street battles on the first day of Ramadan. Police report at least 30 dead and more than 80 wounded, with hospitals pleading for blood as shells hit a hospital and a nursing home. The fighting blocked the main highway to Beirut's airport and wounded many soldiers amid the long Civil War.
