Japanese Ready To Halt Advance
PEIPING May 19 Japanese troops are ready to halt their advance into China proper the Japanese legation announced today reporting that Chinese troops had taken up new defense lines extending from Shunyi 20 miles north of Peiping through Tengchow 13 miles to the east and thence southeastward through Luati toward the sea. S Nakayama charge d affaires of the Legation based his announcement on the assumption that Chinese troops would make no attacks on Japanese if there are further attacks there may be further advances he said. If there are no more attacks Japanese troops will continue to hold an area within China proper equivalent to the area of the state of New Jersey pending assurances that they will not be molested. Eventually they will retire to the Great Wall he said.
