British troops poised to storm Falklands
British assault troops await orders from Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to invade the Argentine-occupied Falkland Islands. London officials said a landing could happen as Buenos Aires contemplates London's latest peace talks offer at the United Nations, with both sides casting doubt on a cease-fire. Secretary General Perez de Cuellar called talks in their final stage and time not on peace. foreign minister Costa Mendez said talks continue but nothing new, while a government spokesman accused Britain of intransigence. Thatcher ordered one more effort to persuade Argentina to pull back, and warned that the war fleet would remove them if they stay this week. Thatcher’s war cabinet convened as officials briefed on military and diplomatic developments. Foreign Secretary Pym reported on Luxembourg talks where seven partners disappointed Britain.
