Death toll climbs in Africa and Zaire rescue

Reports detail a Belgian paratroop operation to evacuate foreigners from Zaire's Shaba province amid ongoing fighting. Ninety Americans evacuated with around 10 remaining. The rescue used Hercules C130 transports and involved a crisis cabinet coordinating with the US France Britain and other states. Also, Eritrean guerrillas claim success near Asmara while condemning Ethiopian air strikes as genocide and Rhodesia witnesses dispute government accounts of civilian deaths near a political meeting citing up to 94 dead.

Hideout of Red Brigades Found in Rome

Police say they uncovered a Red Brigades hideout linked to the Moro kidnapping gang. Eight people were arrested, and officials planned a news conference detailing the discovery and arrests. The site appeared to be where the terrorists mimeographed communiques on the Moro case.

Lorain firefighters’ strike talks stall amid contempt threat

Judge Mikus warned of contempt penalties if the Lorain firefighters did not settle with the city, but said no action would be taken while serious negotiations continued. Negotiations broke down as council negotiators reportedly walked out after days of talks with federal mediator Jack Buettner. Tony Volak, spokesman for Local 267, said a tentative contract was near approval before council balked at language on overtime and 40 hour work week. No new sessions set. both sides uncertain when talks resume.

Orlov Exiled and jailed seven years in Soviet trial

Soviet court found human rights activist Yuri Orlov guilty of anti Soviet activity and sentenced him to seven years in prison and five years of exile. His wife Irina and two sons were allowed in. Sakharov and his wife were briefly detained outside. Security officers removed personal items from Irina during a courtroom search. Western reporters and fellow dissidents waited for word.

Nixon memoirs flop in Elyria sales survey

Local book stores report dismal Nixon memoir sales with only 13 copies sold. Higbee’s account accounts for 12. John Dean and Erlichman lead local sales, with Colson and Haldeman following, while price and timing blamed for weak demand.
