Police Chief E J Stankard orders strict traffic enforcement as Great Lakes Exposition approaches. Offenders with unpaid fines are to be detained until payment or arrans reported within four hours. Beginning immediate campaign, seven motorists were brought in Saturday. five paid and others promised payment.
The DC Court of Appeals ruled Rexford Tugwell s Resettlement Administration unconstitutional citing NRA and AAA precedents. It allowed Congress to appropriate relief funds but limited their use, saying Roosevelt allocated funds improperly and intruded on state rights in a case arising from Franklin Township Somerset Port New Jersey seeking a resettlement project.
The General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church waits the episcopacy committee report on assignments. Officials expect few residence changes for 18 bishops as approval of the report, likely to be presented tonight, could mark a major act before adjournment tomorrow after 19 days of sessions.
Cloudy conditions with afternoon showers and a spell of cooler air tonight. Tuesday appears generally fair with a further drop in temperature.
Washington May 15 delegates abandon inclusion of Scioto river reservoirs in the Copeland Riley bill and focus on flood prevention provisions for the Ohio river. The plan calls for about 35 000 000 to build dams above and below Pittsburgh at headwaters of tributaries. In a separate note, the Senate Finance Committee reports treasury estimates on tax substitutes and wage increases in Bolivia.
Washington May 18 Secretary of State Cordell Hull and Minister Eero Jarnefelt of Finland signed a Finnish American trade agreement lowering tariffs on many articles exchanged between the two nations and designed to stimulate commerce.
Several hundred delegates from Eastern states formed the United States Flood Control Federation in Washington on May 18 and urged the federal government to cover the full cost of flood control at the headwaters of the nation s rivers.
In Trenton on May 18 Borah and Alf Landon meet as formal GOP primary opponents in New Jersey. Observers see the result boosting the Kansan toward the Republican nomination while hinting at a potential Borah bolt. The state also tests Democratic sentiment between Roosevelt and Breckinridge as Breckenridge presses anti-New Deal views.
Elden Freeman of LaGrange was fined $100 and costs after arraignment before Justice Joseph Petro on a charge of driving while intoxicated. He was arrested by State Patrolman J. A. Bower at LaPorte.
Police raided downtown establishments Saturday night in Surprise Yards, arresting Charles Clark of 31 Cambridge Avenue on gambling paraphernalia charges at the Orioles Club on Broad Street. Officers Southam Miller and Olmstead staged the raid, entering through a rose hatch and darkened entrance, with Clark resisting as the door opened and yelling police.
Tony Walach 58 WPA worker of 2532 East List street is held in Lorain city jail for shooting his wife Kate 50 and daughter Mrs Har ry Gracie 28 during early morning. The wife and daughter were hospitalized in critical condition with gunshot wounds. Walach was arrested after the shooting. he was drinking. Neighbors say long quarrels over drinking precede the incident. Gracie’s husband found the scene and called police. A first degree murder charge could be filed if either victim dies.
Police and sheriff reports show numerous weekend traffic crashes in Elyria and vicinity with no person seriously injured. Several incidents include a Walton Ice Co truck collision on Broad Street injuring no one, a West avenue and Second street hit by an unknown youth, damage at Broad and Washington, and other rear end or parking lot mishaps involving residents and out-of-town drivers. Wreckers removed two vehicles. several drivers provided license numbers and locations for follow up.
Eighty nine Elstia children entering school next fall received physical examinations at the opening session of Elyria’s annual summer round-up held at Elyria Memorial hospital. Fifty received immunizations for diphtheria or smallpox. Readings came from McKinley Ely Franklin Gates and St Agnes districts with more districts scheduled for tomorrow morning.
Six men were arrested at the home of George McClain 251 South Park Oberlin Saturday night in a raid by deputy sheriffs and Oberlin police following gambling complaints. McClain pleaded not guilty to operating a disorderly house and was held on 200 bond to trial March 19 at 9:00 a.m. Others arrested include Robert McClain who pleaded guilty and was fined 50 dollars and costs 46 of which suspended Lawrence McClain who pleaded not guilty and was placed under 50 bond Robert Sports and Joe West fined 10 dollars and costs for disorderly conduct Spencer Lawson given a suspended fine of 10 dollars and costs Officers were Chief Parrish and Mertz Cameron Oberlin and Deputies Monroe Adams Moebl Lewis Chapmar.
Two army officers who fought in the Gran Chaco war headed Bolivia and Paraguay today. A bloodless coup unseated Bolivia, leaving the men who fought the war in power with plans for a real new deal for the destitute. Col. Jose David Toro, Bolivian army head, expected to arrive from the Chaco region to assume provisional presidency as a revolutionary junta runs the government. In Paraguay Col Rafael Franco took the oath as provisional president after a coup that ousted President Eusebio Ayala.
Washington May 18 Business labor and government must cooperate to restore production in the nations factories before reemployment can keep pace with recovery the American Federation of Labor said in its monthly business review It quoted that 12 184 000 unemployed in March can only have 4 000 000 jobs created by normal business levels and the remaining unemployed 8 184 000 await faster reemployment progress than achieved so far
Seven people died in Ohio traffic crashes over the weekend. In Hamilton County the death toll rose by five with victims named including Robert McMullen 13 Clara Earhart 8 Louis Weber 55 Thelma Woosler 19 all in Cincinnati and Kenneth Corna Rushville Ind Verne B Simmons 33 faced manslaughter charges after Hugh Nichols 66 died in an Akron collision Mrs Harry F Mellyvain 45 of Lakewood was killed and her husband seriously injured when their car left the road near North Benton Ohio.
Lorain County Coroner ruled death natural for Homer R. McClintock 62 a Grafton resident found dead at his brother Charles home after a heart attack as he went to bed his sister in law heard a crash but did not investigate the body found by Elmer Stoll 20. McClintock born August 7 1873 was unmarried survivors include three brothers Charles Arthur of Grafton and F M of St Peters burg burial in Nesbell’s cemetery with services at the brother’s home tomorrow afternoon at 2.
WARSAW Ky March 18 Three members of a Gallatin county farm family were burned to death when their two story frame home collapsed during a fre Sunday The victims were Marti Madan Av wife Vien BS and their daughter Mrs Theresa Adelme Gex 25 The young woman's husband William R Gev was burned on the hands and face when he jumped ten feet from a porch roof just before the flames collapsed said his wife had tried to rescue her parents.
In Cleveland on May 5 about 100 policemen guarded warehouses of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co as right brand trucks were loaded while 150 striking warehouse and produce union pickets formed a line nearby. Windscreens were removed from trucks as a precaution with four drivers per truck and police escort per vehicle.
Four Townsend leaders connected to the Townsend old age pension movement were summoned to testify before a House investigating committee. They had appealed for public contributions to a Preparedness Fund to support the movement, as a caravan from the West Coast arrived with petitions totaling about 146.6 million names.
The dirigible Hindenburg on its second commercial flight to the United States carried 89 passengers and was en route to New York. Weather was favorable as it averaged about 60 miles an hour on the North Atlantic run. The vessel reported position about 785 miles east southeast of Cape Race with 56 knots reported by Mackay Radio.
The Supreme Court rules the Guffey coal control act invalid, striking down its price fixing method the 15 per cent tax and labor provisions. In a 6 to 3 decision Justice Sutherland writes that federal power ends before interstate commerce begins, nullifying federal regulation of intrastate mining and labor rules tied to production. The ruling cites Schechter and questions the act’s reach over coal mining and related labor provisions.
