Foul spade bid yields 800 penalty in 1974 world bridge match
In the 1974 world championship Italy vs North America, Eric Murray of Canada made a remarkable four spade bid with scant values, helping North to five clubs doubled. He led diamonds and despite losses, his gamble stoked aggressive defense. The hand ended down three, highlighting imperfect play in elite contract bridge.
