Angles Camp California reports Denny Matasci and his frog Davey Croakett winning the Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee. The frog cleared 20 feet 3 inches, breaking the 1966 mark of 19 feet 3 inches and earning $1,200 for the owner amid celebratory cheers.
Glens Falls honors mixed breed dogs in a No pedigrees allowed event ahead of the bicentennial. Sam wins Best All-Around Doggone Good Dog while Nipper and Little Man share Best of Breed tie and prize a $25 savings bond. Little Man is described as a two-foot-long mystery to the owner.
In Rio Grande Ohio a crowd braved rain to watch 102 plain barnyard chicks compete in the fifth annual International Chicken Flying Meet billed as the World Series of rural sport. Lynda won with a 92 foot flight from a mailbox launch, while record holder Lois Laid soared 163 feet 2 inches in 1973.
J S Smith 45 of 177 East St Wellington portrayed Chief Akela in a display at the Bi Cent O Rama held Saturday at Lorain County Fair grounds Wellington. About 4000 scouts and 200 spectators attended the event as part of Pack 444 of the United Congregational Church of Christ in Wellington.
French President Valery Giscard d Estaing arrives in Washington for a six day bicentennial goodwill visit after a 3 hour 37 minute Concorde flight from Paris. The aircraft lands under cloudy skies drawing thousands. commercial service from Paris and London to Dulles to begin next week unless court orders halt. A federal appeals court will hear arguments in two days on banning the Concorde from landing at Dulles or Kennedy airports.
The Elyria Area Chamber of Commerce urges completing East River Parkway and adding downtown parking. It asks Mayor Bowman and Council President Seward to widen West River Road and East Broad Street and favors demolishing old City Hall and Turner Block for parking. The group critiques leasing space in old City Hall and supports private operation if public involvement alludes. It backs full support for East River Parkway amid ongoing traffic concerns on East Bridge and surrounding streets.
A severe earthquake struck central Asia causing serious damage in several towns while major cities such as Tashkent Samarkand and Bukhara reported no casualties. Communications were cut with Gazli and other affected areas as aftershocks were anticipated. The quake registered 7.2 on the Richter scale.
Joseph A. Noveske, lifelong Grafton resident and honorary chief known as Tango Joe, died after strokes and heart problems. A veteran of 70 years with the village, he once aided a bank robbery pursuit on Main Street and retired in April with a council commendation. His funeral plans include the 1938 Diamond T pumper carrying his casket to St Marys Cemetery weather permitting.
MIKIE SHERM reports that Lewis and Katherine Merchant of South Amherst died four hours apart just before their 68th wedding anniversary. They were 94 and 92, owned a general store, and remained active in civic and church life. A joint funeral is planned at St. John United Church of Christ.
