Tariff Bill’s Fate Hangs in Balance
Washington May 17 Hopes for the tariff bill rest on Republican leaders forcing a four vote change before the Senate votes Monday on the Smoot resolution to relax the Debenture plan for farm relief and the flexible repealer clause. Without this, the measure may die in conference as House and Senate differ on two key features near the end of a 16 month journey. Democrats say Republicans will shed no tears if the Smoot vote defeats the bill and it remains deadlocked. Republicans claim they aim to ease the strain and push the bill through before the summer recess. Independent late Republicans who hold power say nothing.
