Careless smoking blamed for Elyria fatal blaze

A fire at 244 Georgia Ave in Elyria killed Paul Trexler Sr s son Paul Jr 19 Donna Roberts 19 and her boyfriend. Paul Sr and two others were injured amid a farewell party for the couple who planned Air Force entry. Assistant Chief Floyd Rumph blamed smoking as the probable cause noting lack of detectors.

Zaire war escalation prompts potential U.S. evacuation

Europeans killed in southern Zaire report conflicts with Belgian and Zambian diplomats who confirm Kolwezi and Mutshatsha fell then disputed details. The State Department weighs evacuating about 80 to 100 Americans, with Carter citing coordination with Belgium and France. Lorain firemen ordered to resume talks under judge order

Seventy two members of Lorain's striking firefighters were found in contempt of court by Common Pleas Judge Paul J Mikus but no penalties were set. The judge ordered the strikers and the city to resume contract negotiations with a federal negotiator present at 1030 am Wednesday in his courtroom. The hearing drew about 100 people, mostly strikers, in the county administration building. Capt James Mertz led about 15 sheriffs deputies to maintain order. Mikus took the matter under advisement and indicated possible future action on the contempt charges. The Local 267 members, represented by Cleveland attorney Mark Rock, advised the strikers to plead the Fifth Amendment.

Cameras at hearing-- first in Lorain County in decades

Lorain County Common Pleas Court allowed television cameras for a contempt hearing for Lorain firefighters. Judge Paul J Mikus cited public interest and waived Canon 35, enabling eight cameramen to film with limited courtroom movement as networks covered the unusual proceeding and Mikus noted no interference with court operations.

Threat to bar St Jude pupils over church contributions

Parents of St Jude School students face a policy threat as a May 5, 1977 letter warns that children whose families have not made weekly $5 tax deductible contributions to the church collection since July 1, 1977 may not return in the fall. The policy, adopted by the Education Commission about a year earlier, requires delinquent families to catch up by June 1. IRS officials dispute the tax deductibility of the contributions.
