Tourists turn volcano watching into a sociable gathering
Visitors from multiple countries camp at a road block near Toutle Washington watching Mount St Helens erupt. Officials closed the mountain, attracting sightseers who mingle beside a highway clearing as cars, campers, and a touring party including a Van Wert Ohio bowling team and an aspiring Los Angeles singer exchange stories while waiting for the clouds to clear and for a good view. No motels are available in the area.
