Raiyanna Riggins, an Oberlin High School senior, is selected as this year's prom pick by Najia Diara Royal Foundation, honoring Najia who was killed in 2009. The foundation supports gun awareness and academic or character excellence, with donors funding dress, tickets, corsage, and beauty services for Raiyanna.
Elyria marks 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger as 36,800 pounds of food are collected, well above last year’s 25,000. Oberlin, Grafton, Wellington and North Ridgeville also contributed thousands to the Salvation Army Food Pantry. Local carriers led the effort with about 60 workers, aided by Midview High School and Lorain County Joint Vocational School students unloading and sorting.
Court records show Thomas Hartless 43 had a history of violence including against nurse Marlina Medrano 46 and a relationship with her. Hartless was found dead inside Pine Kirk Care Center after he shot Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Disario 36 and two nursing home employees. Authorities plan further interviews as they investigate links between Hartless and Medrano and continue to study protective orders and prior arrests.
