Amherst High School Girl Killed By Car On North Lake Street

Debra Vandersommen an 18 year old junior at South Amherst High School was struck from behind by a southbound car on North Lake Street. Police say the driver Rudolph Harsar 32 of Berlin Heights saw the youths just before impact and slowed but could not avoid the collision. The victim dragged 120 feet after impact and died at Amherst Hospital 25 minutes later. Gregory Vandersommen 16 was with her wearing dark clothing. the accident remains under investigation.

Airport authority to seek city and county aid again

Lorain County Regional Airport on Russia Road needs at least 25 000 from Elyria Lorain and the county to continue operations. Officials may seek additional 88 000 from each later and pursue a 528 000 FAA grant with local funds matching 264 000. Existing investments exceed 219 000 from each subdivision.

Golden Age Housing Units Seek Elyria Council OK

LMHA seeks federal funds for 200 single unit golden age homes in Elyria. Director Ronald W. Ashley told the community development committee the council should approve by June. LMHA may approve at its May 2a meeting if the council signs off. About 150 Elyria qualified applicants exist.

Infiltration Route From Laos Stalls Under Heavy Air Raids

North Vietnamese engineers pursued a major infiltration road from Laos into South Vietnam near Khe Sanh. U S air strikes including 40 B52 missions halted activity after the road reached about six miles into South Vietnam. Officials weigh whether the route was for supplies or heavy artillery linking to a tank trail toward Camp Carroll and eastern U S installations.

North Vietnam to take 570 POWs back from the South

North Vietnam agreed to receive 570 sick and wounded prisoners of war from the South on June 4, the largest such group to be returned. The move follows a Paris talks offer and was hailed by U S Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker as an encouraging sign for broader prisoner releases.

Oberlin College drug raids net four arrests

Oberlin police and college security arrested four students in two drug raids at 92 South Main Street and Dascomb Hall on the Oberlin campus. Stephen Morton David Holman and Jed Pollack were charged with hallucinogen counts and sales, with Hoffenberg and Harrow later sought or charged. Bond set, remaining investigations ongoing.
