Senate kills southern educational compact bill in civil rights clash
Washington reports that the Senate killed the southern educational compact bill for this session after a 38 to 37 vote to recommit it to the Judicials committee. The move postponed a broader civil rights floor fight as Republicans planned action on an anti lynching measure once manpower legislation advances. Senator Morse indicated he would attach President Truman’s national civil rights program to the bill if the recommittal failed.
