The United States urged the UN to appoint a non American high commissioner for Palestine before Britain's mandate ends. Auto Workers Build Seven Million Strike Fund
The United Auto Workers began assembling a seven million dollar strike fund to support 73,000 Chrysler workers in demand for a third round of postwar wage increases. The Chrysler strike expanded as the New Castle Indiana plant was ordered to quit, though it stayed open yesterday due to signal mixups. Across Michigan Indiana and California about 15 Chrysler plants shut, totaling significant production losses. Briggs Manufacturing idled 11,000 workers, with 2,000 more to be laid off Monday. The UAW executive board met to finalize plans for funding by August through voluntary member contributions. Labor observers foresee a potential length similar to or longer than the 113-day GM No. 2 strike.

Secretary Marshall urged concrete Soviet action to prove sincere peace aims, ruling out private U.S.-Soviet talks and stressing UN, Berlin, Austria, and Korea as arenas for progress.
