Steel strike ends as a government supervised election set

The Jones & Laughlin steel strike ends after 36 hours with 27,000 workers returning to work in Pittsburgh and Aliquippa. An election supervised by the National Labor Relations Board will be held by May 20, under terms of a tentative settlement. Philip Murray announces the agreement and orders picket lines dissolved.

High pressure north of Lake Superior extends southwest to Texas. A second high over the North Pacific coast and low pressure over New England, Saskatchewan, and Arizona. Light to moderate rains reported from the Mississippi Valley eastward in the past 24 hours with precipitation continuing along the Lower Lakes. Cooler in the Eastern and Central states with temperatures 5 to 10 degrees below seasonal average. Warmer trend now under way in the Northern Plains, Canadian Northwest and the Rocky Mountain area.

Dr J J McAlpine to occupy Samuel Austin Cottage

The Elyria Home for the Aged of the Methodist Church selects retired minister Dr J J McAlpine and his wife to occupy the Samuel Austin Memorial cottage on the campus. McAlpine previously served at multiple North East Ohio Conference churches including Huntsburg Mechanicsville Perry Kinsman Road Miles Park and Franklin Avenue Cleveland Bedford Jefferson Mt Union Alliance Woodland Oberlin High St Barberton and Mentor La Grange.

TVA Victory Reinforces Tennessee Valley Authority Lead

Covington Ky May 14 The sixth United States circuit court of appeals set aside a lower court injunction that blocked TVA from building new power lines or soliciting customers The ruling moves the case from Tennessee to the Eastern District of Kentucky and confirms TVA jurisdiction The suit had claimed TVA was unconstitutional and a federal monopoly risking $900000000 of private investments Two private power companies remained in the suit after others withdrew

Basque Force Air Attack Boosts Bilbao Defense

Basque air force flew for the first time since the Bilbao assault began and bombarded Nationalist positions on Mount Biscarg. The communiqué said planes from Valencia arrived, strengthening Bilbao’s defense as Gen Emilio Mola’s air arm had faced no opposition until now. The Basque operation targeted Soilluve and Biscarg Heights, key to the campaign.

Loren Portman Named Scout Representative for Jamboree

Loren Portman aged 20 from Lake Avenue will represent Boy Scout Troop 119 at the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Washington next month. Portman was chosen for his outstanding scout record and will attend with funding from Elyria Post No 12 American Legion and the Forty and Eight. Troop 119 is sponsored by the Legion post and thousands of scouts from across the nation are expected to attend.

Search For Co-ed Spreads To Buffalo

Ruth Baumgardner, a student at Ohio Wesleyan University, remains missing since May 3. A possible sighting in Buffalo, corroborated by a boardinghouse owner who said a young woman matching her description sought a room, was followed by recognition of Miss Baumgardner’s photo in the paper.

Reminiscence Night Recalls Elyria of 1885

A gala Elyria dinner at the First M. E. Church honors local firms and individuals active 25 years or more. Henry P. Boynton, once Elyria Telegram editor, recalled about 90 firms and residents from 1885, naming stores, banks, factories, hotels, and professionals, with audience input adding further names.

Banquet for Dr Dan Freeman Bradley Cancelled

In Oberlin Ohio preparations for a Cleveland banquet in honor of Dr Dan Freeman Bradley were canceled at noon today due to Mrs Bradley Ill Health. It was unclear if the event would be postponed or canceled. Dr Bradley preached his last sermon on Sunday at Pilgrim church and will retire from active work this Saturday.

British Ship Explosion Fatal To 8

British destroyer Hunter exploded off Almeria on patrol duty killing eight crew and wounding twenty. Initial reports blamed a mine. unofficial sources suggested a German torpedo. Loyalist and British authorities rushed ships and officials to the scene as divers examined the hull for the cause.

Wind Damages Greenhouses at Fields Corners and Ridgeville

A miniature cyclone struck late yesterday afternoon along Butternut Ridge Road, wrecking half of one greenhouse on the M. D. Bartter farm and lightly damaging a Ridgeville Greenhouse Company structure across the road. Three Bartter greenhouses remained intact with blossoms unaffected. neighbors helped clear debris as no one was inside.

Fairbanks Flood Threatens Alaska Town

Fairbanks residents rushed to river banks to build barricades as ice choked floodwaters from the Tanana and Chena rivers threaten the town. Women and children moved to camps on higher ground while three Alaska Railroad track sections were washed out and mail and passenger service from Seward halted. Most communication lines were down.

Woman Recalls Cabin Fight Near Cleveland Road

A federal Justice investigator corroborated a tale of two young men attacking a woman in a Dyke tourist cabin on Cleveland road last Friday. The injured traveler, who is hospitalized in Erie, said she had picked up the suspects in Toledo and was taking them toward Erie before the assault and bucket dousing. The men drove her to Buffalo after the attack, where one is reportedly held on a stolen car charge. another suspect's location was clarified as Buffalo rather than Erie.

Dunn Seizes Four Slot Machines in One-Man Raids

Lorain County’s Dunn led a one-man campaign seizing four slot machines after a crusade against gambling. He confiscated machines at Kreuzer’s and Rooney’s spots, then turned them over to Elyria authorities. He swore warrants for Hampel and Rooney as the sheriff’s office faced no prior complaints.
