Allied counter proposal at armistice talks safeguards prisoner's rights

At Panmunjom the Allies put forward a plan to guard prisoners who refuse repatriation while accepting parts of the Red eight point program. The proposal limits custody to Chinese prisoners and envisions a neutral commission with veto rights and strict interview safeguards. The Reds rejected mass repatriation terms but praised some points and asked for a recess to Thursday.

Truck Outfit Hit By Train At Rural Crossing

Cecil Valentine 46 of Detroit escaped injury after his Inter State Trucking Co trailer was struck by a New York Central engine at a single track crossing on Route 254 two and a half miles east of Route 301. He swerved to avoid the engine after not hearing the whistle until 85 feet away. the rear corner of the trailer was struck, tipping the rig onto its side. Engineer Frank Kuchenrither, Sugar Ridge Road, operated the locomotive.

Train Delayed By Broken Rail Near Olive Street Crossing

A broken rail on a New York Central track near Olive street grade crossing delayed a coal train bound for Lorain last night and blocked Olive street for about 30 minutes. An engineer detected the defect before damage occurred, the line reports. The rail was replaced today and crossings returned to normal.

Oberlin Gunner Dies From Mortar Fire in Europe

Pfc. William Gaeuman 22 of Oberlin died from mortar fire while serving with the Seventh Army. A California native who moved to Oberlin in 1944, he had defended Heartbreak Ridge and was to return to the U S under the rotation plan. He is survived by his father, a stepmother, a brother, great grandmother, and several aunts and uncles. The War Department said his body would be returned to Oberlin soon.

Foundry Strike Enters Week Two At Elyria Foundry

Strike by Local 283 of the International Molders and Foundry Workers at Elyria Foundry Division of Industrial Brownhoist Corp marks its first full week with no settlement in sight.
