Elyria City officials plan a 495 mill school levy on the November ballot, alongside a 0.5 percent income tax renewal. The levy will not avert a 1999 1.4 million deficit immediately but is expected to erase the shortfall by 2003. The district postponed earlier plans, has a new superintendent, and will begin collections in 1999 if approved.
Chronicle-Telegram columnist and reporter Paul Facinelli sues county chief assistant prosecutor Jonathan Rosenbaum for defamation seeking 1 million dollars in Cuyahoga County court. Facinelli remains employed as his case prompts review of his Chronicle position. He had in 1996 authored a probe into the prosecution of Nancy Smith and Joseph Allen, a Head Start bus driver and two molestation defendants.
Otis Wright Kent Gibbs Jr Kelly Wilt and Michael Jackson weigh in on price hikes noting general increases, the impact of small rises, and expectations that bulk buying could improve service despite higher costs.
The Postal Rate Commission approved most of the post office request for higher prices, with first class letters rising to 33 cents and a below full increase on other rates. It suggested delaying broad changes to 1999 while noting the service has earned over $1 billion annually since 1995.
